Engr. Seyi Makinde is the current governor of Oyo State Governor. He was elected under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in the 2019 governorship election .

Seyi Makinde was born to a renowned teacher turned accountant; late Pa Olatubosun Makinde and Madam Abigail Makinde of Aigbofa Compound on 25th December, 1967 in Oja’ba, Ibadan, Oyo State.
He started his education career at St Paul Primary School and later proceeded to St Michael Primary School, Yemetu, Ibadan. After his primary school education, he was enrolled to Bishop Phillips Academy, Monatan, Ibadan for his secondary education. After his secondary school education, he gained admission in 1985 to the University of Lagos where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.

Engr. Seyi Makinde is Oyo State Governor-elect in the 2019 governorship election, he was elected under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

In his quest to have more knowledge, he was trained at Industrial Control Services in Houston, Texas on Safety Shutdown System; and Development of Analytical Competence for Managing Operations at Lagos Business School (now Pan-Atlantic University)in 1999.

In 2000, he undergone training in automation. He later proceeded to Jiskoot Auto Control Training Centre, Kent, England to study Fundamentals of Crude Sampling. In 2005, he studied- Understanding and Solving Complex Business Problems at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA.

Without mincing words, Engr. Seyi Makinde has led credence to the saying that it doesn’t matter where and how one starts, where one ends depend on one’s ability.

Importantly, his Spartan self-discipline and leadership by example, stands out as a great testimonial to the strength of Engr. Seyi Makinde character as conscientious self-made man not given to frivolities.

Makinde was among the fortunate students that did their national service (NYSC) with Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) of Nigeria, during his service, he was engaged as a pupil engineer. He served in different capacities; handling and partaking in several key projects between 1990 and 1992. From 1992 to 1997, he worked as a field Engineer (Eket operations) for Rebold International Limited and in 1995, he was appointed as Field Manager in the same company.

He is the Group Managing Director of Makon Group Limited; an indigenous oil and gas companies in Nigeria. It is on record that he established his first oil and gas private business called Makon Engineering and Technical Services, (METS) at the age of 29 in the year 1997 after earning years of work experience with international oil and gas companies after working for five years (1992-1997) with various international oil and gas companies (IOCs), as the Engineering Manager.

Makinde is a member of national and international professional bodies notably: Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Council for Regulations of Engineering in Nigeria(COREN), Oil and Gas Design Engineers of Nigeria (OGDEN), International Society of Automation (ISA), Institute of Measurement and Control UK; and American Measurement Institute (AMI).

Since he joined politics, the whole phase of politics in the state has changed with his high level of commitment, accessibility, tolerance and service. This is evidenced in the restoration and helping the less-privilege in the state. Indeed, the face of politic has drastically changed from somberness that hitherto pervaded the corridor of power to that of unprecedented liveliness as there is no longer any dull moment.

In 2007, he contested for the Oyo South Senatorial seat under the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) but lost to the People’s Democratic Party candidate- Kamoru Adedibu. He remained undeterred and he re-contested for that same position in 2010 under the People’s Democratic Party, PDP but lost in the primary election.

In 2014, he opted for governorship position under the platform of People’s Democratic Party, PDP upon the conclusion of the party’s primary election, he was denied the governorship nomination ticket. Makinde however, remained true to his ambition and defected to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), and contested for gubernatorial candidate under SDP but lost out in the end.

He is known for his philanthropic deeds just like his late father; Pa Olatubosun Makinde. He had made charitable donations and awarded scholarships to students across Ibadan, Oyo States and beyond. Widows were not left out from his charity programme. He also gave out micra cars to numerous people in the state.
