Just about two years after Nigeria’s independence,theNational UniversityCommission (NUC)was established as an advisory agency on higher education in the cabinet officeof the First Republic of Nigeria.
The NUC was charged with the responsibility of advising government on financial needs of the universities and to handle)the planning of a balanced and coordinated development of university education in Nigeria.

They Grant approval for all academic programmes run in Nigerian universities i.e Granting approval for the establishment of all higher educational institutions offering degree programmes in Nigerian universities
They Ensure quality assurance of all academic programmes offered in Nigerian universities
They Channel for all external support to the Nigerian universities.
