The Kingdom of Kongo was an African kingdom located in west central Africa in what is now the Republic of the Congo, and the western portion of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It used a white flag with red cross centered on it

On the eve of its independence from France, the Republic of the Congo adopted a new flag in 1959 to replace the French Tricolour. The flag consisting of a yellow diagonal band divided diagonally from the lower hoist-side corner, with a green upper triangle and red lower triangle.

In 1970, when the People’s Republic of the Congo was established the new regime changed the flag to a red field with the coat of arms of the People’s Republic in the canton. The red flag was used until the Communist regime collapsed in 1991.

The new government restored the original flag of the Congo on June 10, 1991 – the flag consisting of a yellow diagonal band divided diagonally from the lower hoist-side corner, with a green upper triangle and red lower triangle.
